Innovative Meets Iconic

In keeping with this tradition of innovation and creativity, we’re genuinely excited to have been a part of contributing to the beauty and ambiance of one of Chicago’s most iconic buildings: The Godfrey Hotel Chicago.

This unique hotel boasts stunning views of Chicago’s Northside so creating the world-famous I|O Urban Roofscape on this building’s fourth floor was a no brainer. With its edgy cubist design and aluminum façade, the Roofscape is a prime location for events, daytime dining, and nightlife.

Q & A

Diana Evans, Creative Director for Spearhead Sales & Marketing, had the opportunity to chat with Libart USA’s Director of Business Development, Jason Clarkson, about the Godfrey I|O Urban Roofscape project and why it’s one of Libart’s premier destinations to show off!

Diana Evans: Congratulations! How does it feel to be featured in one of the TOP restaurants for enclosures in Chicago?

Jason Clarkson: We are very proud to have been a part of this project [because it is one of] the premier restaurant rooftop space destinations in Chicago. We’re also excited that we were able to provide such a patio space that created that “Wow” factor. The area also offers the Godfrey Hotel the financial benefits of a short-cycle of ROI and incremental revenue generation because of year-round use.

What were some exciting moments in the journey of getting here?

This project was Libart’s first high-profile commercial retractable roof system installed in Chicago, so it was an honor to participate in the beautification of a recession-era abandoned concrete shell and turning it into a high-end, sought-after boutique hotel with an indoor/outdoor roofscape. It was equally exciting to assist the hotel group in their pioneering vision of incorporating a retractable roof and patio space as one of the first in the city of Chicago.

What are some takeaways?

This project was (and is) a great example of how we can create a short-cycle ROI – less than six months. The way that the Godfrey Hotel utilizes the 4th-floor space for such diverse events such as launch parties, fashion shows, corporate and client events, and showcases, makes the case that a retractable roof at a venue can also provide incremental revenue year-round. Not to mention being able to bring the breathtaking views of the Chicago skyline to Godfrey’s visitors was terrific.

How long did the production take for this project?

The overall duration of the project, from contract to complete installation, was approximately six months.

How long was the install process?

Install process was approximately six weeks.

Do you visit this site when you are in Chicago?

The whole team visits the site regularly when we’re in town for business or personal recreation. We also like to offer our potential clients site visits and overnight stays to get a first-hand view of the experience and benefits of an indoor/outdoor roofscape that can be created with a retractable roof system. It is a project that is typically our go-to project for potential clients so they can understand the benefits of a retractable roof and year-round use.

How has the restaurant benefited from this all-weather patio enclosure?

The Godfrey has benefited financially from a short-cycle ROI (less than six months) and by the incremental revenue generated by year-round use. Space can be used as an interactive indoor/outdoor venue to host special events, daytime dining, and nightlife. We know that this location is a premier showpiece for the hotel brand and have been told guests fly in from all parts of the country to see the I/O Urban Roofscape all year long and in any season.

Anything else you would like to add?

It is important to note that by the Godfrey Hotel capturing their vision for an indoor/outdoor retractable roof patio space it strengthened the case for the utilization of the area that is adaptable to changing conditions, provides that “Wow” factor, and offers financial benefits that has paved a new path for hotel/restaurant/hospitality design.

Note: The VU Rooftop in this article for Urbanmatter is a recently completed project with 10 of our Libart PanoraView retractable windows and doors. Also, the Hotel Lincoln/J. Parker on this list is our Libart Evolution Freestanding Retractable Enclosure.
