Indoor Pool Project: As real estate has been snatched up in the booming Silicon Valley, homes have gotten intimately close. Alan is a homeowner and family guy living in Palo Alto, Californa. He felt it was time to do something about it when he found himself in his own living room while simultaneously (and quite literally) within feet of his neighbors’ adjacent property. So when the neighbors put their house on the market, Alan strategized. He bought the property with the intent of turning it into his family’s own little tropical oasis. His vision included a pool house complete with custom pool, lots of natural light, and of course, the ability to swim year-round, rain or shine. The typical Northern California swim season is 4-5 months. So, finding a year-round option would more than double their swimming season.

When Alan went about researching his options, he came across a couple that spoke to his needs. He didn’t consider an indoor pool for very long. As that wouldn’t give him the natural lighting and would cost at least twice as much as an enclosure. He considered a solid structure that incorporated NanaWall® doors into the sides. This option would open up the space to the outdoors when possible, but would cost at least $150,000. But when he realized that he could have a retractable pool enclosure for much less, he knew the decision had become a “no-brainer.”

Alan decided on Libart’s lean-to structure that would blend with the style of the pool house, and went with the trackless (Teleglide) option for a cleaner look and featuring big windows for added comfort. The enclosed Hawaiian-themed pool features a pebble-tec floor complete with custom-made tiles with turtle designs for accents. For added convenience, a swim jet for exercise and a corner hot tub for de-stressing were also included. Just for a little added fun, Alan installed LED lights that “dance” to the music and add to the party-style atmosphere. Because the solar heat gain from the polycarbonate material (which makes up the roof of the structure) can make this tropical oasis, well, tropical, the ventilation ered by opening up the lean-to is an added bonus.

The pool house, kitchen, and living room are perfect for family gatherings. It is also perfect for dinner parties, and even simply entertaining the kids and their friends. Alan says one of his favorite moments brought on by their private tropical haven is the response he gets from friends. He loves when they are invited for impromptu pool parties on dreary winter days. He loves watching their confusion concerning a rain-soaked pool party turn into the thrill of swimming warmly and comfortably amidst the sound of rain beating on the enclosure. It might just be enough to make a dreary winter day worth looking forward to.
